A Brief Introduction to School of Foreign Languages and Cultures

 

The School of Foreign Languages and Cultures was established in 2003 with the amalgamation ofthe former English Department of Sichuan Institute of Science and Technology and Chengdu Teacher’s College. Now she has two major set-ups: English and Japanese which aims to equip her students with the knowledge required in various fields such as foreign affairs, trade & finance and education. She also takes her leading task to train students in language proficiency and impart sufficient knowledge in foreign cultures so as to meet the demands of the society and the future world.

The current faculty consists of 111 teachers, including 5 professors, 24 associate professors, 62 lecturers and 20 teaching assistants, among whom 36 members have obtained master degree and 18 members are pursuing master degree. Over the years of teaching and researching, the faculty has accumulated rich experiences in both the language teaching and the scientific research. In the past four years, teachers in the School have shouldered up 41 research projects of different academic levels, and they have 11 textbooks, academic books, translated works, dictionaries and 287 theses published.

The total number of the students in the school is 1145, including 678 undergraduates of English, 247 undergraduates of Japanese, 164 three-year students and 56 postgraduates. 80.89% of English majors and 92.30% of Japanese majors of Grade 2004 have passed national Band 4 tests. Students are also motivated in joining social activities so as to put their knowledge into the social practice.
Meanwhile, college English teaching for non-English majors is always one of the primary tasks of the school. In the national CET4 tests, the passing rate of the students keeps an increasing tendency, from 37.50% of Grade 2003 to 56.09% of Grade 2005. Since the College English Teaching Reform began, the school has seen more improvement in her teaching methods and facilities.

During the short years since her foundation, the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures has made continuous efforts in her development and achieved remarkable progress. It is certain that she will embrace the new opportunities and achieve even greater accomplishments.
